In 1980 at age thirteen, Dan was hired by Shumaker Homes as a part-time helper after school cutting grass and cleaning inventory homes.  Since then he has played a crucial role in the family’s construction and development business.  As the second generation to lead this family business he has worked his way up through the ranks holding every position possible.

In 1999 at age thirty-four, Dan was promoted to President and CEO of Shumaker Homes.  Constantly evaluating new opportunities to improve building practices and maintain or reduce consumer costs, he has a presence on all construction sites and stays updated on industry trends and new technologies.

Dan’s love for building is evident by his accomplishments, and, like his father, he’s left a mark on the Columbia home building industry.

Interview with Dan Shumaker

Q. Where did you grow up and what was it like?

A. I grew up in Columbia.  I attended Brennen elementary, Hand middle & Dreher high schools.  I attended Spartanburg Methodist College, where I studied Religion.  I grew up in an average middle class family with a very down to earth attitude and work ethic.  My family was totally involved in the day to day operations of this business.

Q. How long have you been in the business and how did you get started?

A. I started working as a laborer and moved up through the ranks as my age, knowledge and experience permitted.  I grew up wanting to be a builder.  In fact, I never wanted to be anything else.

Q. What are your professional qualifications?

A. Well, besides my education and general knowledge of the business from the inside out, I’m a licensed home builder; I am registered with the Southern Building Code Congress as a Residential Home Inspector.  I hold many designations and continually pursue the latest techniques and trends in Homebuilding.

Q. How organized are your work sites?

A. Very.  I truly believe that a clean job site is a healthy job site.  We do everything possible to reduce waste, as well as the possibility of accidents.  We try to keep our neighborhoods clean and safe.

Q. How involved are you in our home building process?

A. Very.  I am “hands on” in every aspect of this building….Construction, development, sales and marketing.  I shop my competition myself and make all major decisions.

Q. What about providing references?

A. We have tons of testimonials from customers, as well as companies or individuals that we’ve done business with.  We also have references from the Executive officer of the Home Building Association, the Past President of the homebuilders association, our Interior Design firm and more.

Q. Have you received any awards as a home builder?

A. Yes.  I have received the Builder Of The Year award, The Gordon A. Harrison award, the Life Spike award and numerous Regal awards.  I have also received awards for The Parade of Homes and The Tour of Homes.

Q. What is something you are really proud of?

A. First and foremost… my son Harlen.  He’s such a great kid.  I am really proud of my company and all of the wonderful things we have been able to participate in and do for others.  We introduced steel framing in residential construction in 1997.  We constructed and donated the Aldersgate Home which was built for the Methodist conference on the campus of the Epworth Children’s Home.  This was needed to house six mentally challenged women.  We went to Biloxi, Miss. to aid the victims of Hurricane Katrina with the homebuilders association’s disaster relief team.  I’m really proud to be a second generation builder.  My parents started this company in 1965, and have maintained a wonderful reputation in this community.  Last but not least, we are serving this challenging market without compromising our integrity.

Q. What sets Shumaker apart from the rest?

A. Flexibility!  We also incorporate “value engineering”, which involves designing the home in a way that minimizes waste while maximizing space and efficiency.  We are locally owned and operated and family oriented.

I initially had a contract on a home that was up the street from the Shumaker home. It had a couple of problems that needed to be fixed so my aunt, who is a real estate agent, suggested that I take a look at the Shumaker home right up the street. It was a brand new home. Everything about it looked g..
